Cold Weather Lawn Tips
Did you know that fall and winter are crucial times of the year for the overall health of your lawn?
At Mathis Outdoors, we’ve encountered nearly everything when it comes to winter lawn care. We recommend the following practices to help your lawn stay strong and healthy as the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop.
Mowing Height
Continue with the same mowing height you use in warm weather. Avoid scalping or reducing the grass canopy height, as a robust canopy helps prevent weeds and mitigates the effects of frost on the soil.
Dormancy
Allow your lawn to rest! Winter dormancy is essential for a healthy lawn come spring. At Mathis Outdoors, we apply multiple rounds of pre-emergents during the cold season to prevent winter weeds, like Poa Annua and Henbit, from taking root.
Reduce Watering
It is time to turn off those irrigation systems and roll up those hoses! As the cool weather moves in, your turf’s growth will slow down requiring significantly less water. Over watering this time of year can cause fungal growth and ultimately ruin your spring lawn.
Remember, the healthier your lawn is during dormancy, the stronger and greener it will be once the growing season begins.
